On a related note regarding transgendered people. I was in a discussion with a person who indicated they are Non-Binary. Now I laughed on the inside. You need to define what that “thing” that you are “NON” means. In this case the biological male I was speaking with was referring to gender characteristics to define them self. To use a very general concept merely to discuss this. Non-binary generally means (give leeway) that they don’t identify with stereotypical “male” or “female” characteristics in the psychological gender realm. Trust me I know this definition is weak at best.
In the discussion I thought this was fantastic, I know this person on a personal level and I agreed completely. Yet the problem is this. The onus of responsibility is on a person saying they are a non “thing” to supply a definition for what that “thing” is. This is basic logic. Then given this basic logic, and they are saying they are “non-binary” referring to gender they now have to explain to me how they are specifically “non-binary” so I don’t disrespect them from that point on. Basically I need them to explain the binary “male”, and “female” and what “non-binary” means for them personally. I say personally because it should go without saying people who use the term “non-binary” with uniquely define it.
If I say for example out of this controversial realm into another just for fun… I could say I am a non-climate change person. Here again I am required to define what exactly “climate change” is in this contentious topic area today.
Other obvious examples:
Non-religious. I need to define what religion is.
Non-resident. I need to define what that means regarding state, city, country etc.
Non-conformist
Non-hearing, sighted, ambulatory etc. Impaired.
Non-Profit
So as you can see when you say you are a Non-thing you need to define that thing. We have all been in the position of saying you are pro-something. Well define what that something is.
Again contentious examples.
Pro-sex education
Pro-Life (good luck defining life)
Pro-Choice/Abortion (again good luck here)
The end point here is people need to be willing to define a concept they are for or against, (or insert your own), pro, con, non the list is endless.
Ultimately people who put forth these concepts either want one of a few options. Primarily I think psychologically they want to feel special when they have come to the realization they are not, so want to feel good about themselves. Another concept is that they are putting it forth for a contentious discussion, of which depending on the concept or area I will gladly engage. I know there are other motivations. I think these are the top ones. I love debate but just be willing to define constructs with me before challenging me. I say it because I have already defined the concepts in my head if I start to reciprocate a debate challenge.
Most of us are not special except to certain people in our private lives. As I said at the very beginning of my posts I am many times am regurgitating ideas I have read about or watched for decades, I just can’t remember citations.
