Abortion, Don’t mix philosophy and science. 7-13-23. 7-13-23

The main problem that I have with the whole abortion controversy may be a bit different than what people think. My issue is that people are mixing philosophy and science inappropriately together. What I mean by this is you decide when abortion is OK based on your own personal belief system, and whether it be religious or otherwise, it does not matter. You have that choice to decide when you think life begins. This is simply a philosophical predilection, and it is your prerogative to do so. What you are doing is invoking a demarcation criterion. For some people it is the moment of conception, which is perfectly OK. For other people it’s when the heart starts beating or whatever other criterion you want to invoke as the point of demarcation to say that it is a live human being. For each of us, we get to make the choice of what we use to demarcate as a human being that is alive versus a fetus, or embryo, or whatever other biological term you want to utilize.

That being said the problem I have is that people then try to substantiate their position with scientific knowledge. This is a cute move but totally inappropriate. I appreciate people are actually looking at science. However, what they do not realize most of the time is that science is meant to be dispassionate, unbiased, and NOT consider a personal bias, or preference or personal demarcation criterion. Science is meant to be this way, this is why for those of you who have studied the scientific method beyond high school. You will realize this is why we use double blind procedures when possible in science. If don’t know the term double blind study, look it up.

So really, at the core of this it is very basic. People are invoking their own criterion of demarcation as to when the organism that is inside of a female is decidedly human. So therefore every time people get into these debates, the problem is they are at cross purposes. They are utilizing different criteria for demarcating when the organism is a human being. This is why I don’t get involved in these debates is because most people I speak with don’t realize that there’s a difference between the philosophical demarcation criterion that they are attempting to utilize and put the philosophy of science. Here science is not making a statement of when the organism is a “Human.” Science is merely giving data as to the developmental process of any organism on this planet.

(Side note, but true and people hate it when I say this, that organism inside of the female is technically a parasite by biological definition.)

When you decide when life begins is your own philosophical predilection of which you are entitled to. This is what confuses a lot of people is each person has their own criterion of demarcation for when life begins, one is not necessarily superior to another.

Th point is DO NOT go to science and say well there is a heartbeat so they are “human”, or conception, they are “Human.”

Please stop mixing a philosophical point with science.

If you thought I was going to give you the answer here, sorry the reason is we all have our own personal definitions.
