Age and dating… Older women and younger men. 3-29-19

For total transparency I do not like Pete Davidson from Saturday Night Live. I also found out he is dating Kate Beckinsale. Nonetheless, I guess the
media is giving them/him/her crap about the age discrepancy. Watch SNL’s Weekend Update https://youtu.be/hlzAhIl482c It is quite funny at the end
Colin asks Pete about dating. Pete acknowledges the age difference and says “If you have questions about a relationship with a big age difference j
just ask”… Then he lists off all the men in hollywood who are dating women much younger. The list was impossible to keep up with it is so long.
I loved it and hated it at the same time. I loved the fact he said talk to them and ask them about the issue! Frankly, I’m sick and fucking tired of the
double standard. I’m tired of all double standards and cases of Special Pleading, where something is made exempt to the logic you apply to all other
cases.

The reality is that age does not make that much of a difference in dating. Even though I don’t like him, I’ll defend Pete’s position to the death because his point was powerful – yes, there is a 20 something year age difference yet two things: One I don’t know his maturity level it may be quite high due to his life experience. For all I know Kate’s maturity may be quite low, and they end up matching up on maturity. Two, you will not be able to convince me that all the men in Hollywood are so immature when in their 40’s or 50’s or even 60’s that they should be dating women in their 20’s and 30’s. Pete’s point is well received and well put in my opinion in a comedic way but that is fine. The point is this is simply a ridiculous double standard. I understand people will attempt to invoke the maturity factor I have addressed it here. Also, I will address common myths like this in a mini series of posts regarding common myths in psychology. Come back soon…

  1. I find people’s reactions to this relationship fascinating. Of course there is a double standard, no find people’s reactions to this relationship fascinating. Of course there is a double standard, no surprise there. Men can date younger women without it being an issue, it’s just how it is. In this particular situation between Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson, it’s not just about age. It’s about Pete being considered out of Kate’s league by the masses. Kate is a phenomenally beautiful woman and Pete is definitely on the dorky side. Maturity aside, it’s a pretty superficial judgement that is being made. Some people are downright angry about it, generally guys. It’s that what the hell does she see in him idea. I find it hilarious actually but not at all surprising. Some guys and teen girls were freaking out about pictures of them kissing being put out. It’s also a fantasy for some, the younger guy and the older woman. It’s a very vicarious thing for some to watch this play out. It’s interesting and unexpected for her to go from being married to someone closer to her age and having a child with someone closer to her age to dating someone younger. She has been divorced 3 years so she has dated a guy in his 20’s and a guy in his 30’s and now Pete. I love the way he made his point, that was brilliant. Pete was dating someone younger before Kate. And if Kate wants to have some fun, what the hell, why not? If it turns into something serious, so be it. But both of them are famous so the media is going to run with this while they can to generate clicks and hits. However the relationship between them goes, it’s their business. I think it’s sweet. People connect for a wide variety of reasons regardless of who other people think should be together or not. I know she had deleted posts about Pete from her Instagram because she was sick of the negativity. That’s ridiculous to me but some people have to find something to be negative about. They shouldn’t have to explain or justify their relationship to anyone.
